Preah Vihear Temple
About
Preah Vihear Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched dramatically on the edge of the Dangrek escarpment along the Thai-Cambodian border, at an elevation of 525 meters. Built primarily in the 9th to 12th centuries and dedicated to Shiva, the temple is laid out along a 800-meter axial promenade that climbs through five successive gopuras to a main sanctuary with sweeping views over the Cambodian plain below. Its position on a natural defensive cliff and its elaborately carved pediments and lintels make it architecturally unique among all Khmer temples. Sovereignty over the temple was the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, settled in Cambodia's favor by the International Court of Justice in 1962 and reaffirmed in 2013.
