Battambang Bamboo Train

The Battambang Bamboo Train, known locally as the norry, is one of Cambodia's most quirky and beloved travel experiences, operating along a section of dilapidated colonial-era railway track outside Battambang city. Each norry consists of a simple bamboo platform balanced on two metal axles fitted with small wheels, powered by a salvaged motorbike engine that propels it along the track at a surprisingly brisk pace. When two norries meet on the single-track line, the less loaded one is dismantled and stacked to the side to let the other pass, a pragmatic local tradition that has become part of the charm. The ride passes through flat rice paddies, rural villages, and golden countryside, delivering an authentic glimpse of provincial Cambodian life from an entirely unique vantage point.
