Sambor Prei Kuk
About
Sambor Prei Kuk, meaning Temple in the Forest, is Cambodia's most significant pre-Angkorian archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2017, located about 30 kilometers north of Kampong Thom town. The complex was the capital of the Chenla Kingdom under King Isanavarman I in the early 7th century, predating the Angkor empire by over two centuries, and contains more than 100 brick temple towers distributed across three main groups amid dense forest. The structures display an early transition from Indian architectural influence toward the distinctly Khmer style that would later define Angkor, and several towers feature remarkable flying-palace medallion carvings unique to this site. Well-maintained forest paths link the temple groups through a setting of impressive trees and dappled light.
