Independence Monument
About
The Independence Monument in Phnom Penh was built in 1958 to commemorate Cambodia's independence from France, achieved on 9 November 1953. Designed by the renowned Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann, the structure draws directly from Khmer architectural tradition and takes the form of a lotus-shaped stupa inspired by the central tower of Angkor Wat's Banteay Srei temple. Standing 37 meters tall, it is tiered in five levels adorned with naga serpents and carved decorative elements in pink sandstone and red brick. The monument sits at the intersection of Norodom and Sihanouk Boulevards and is illuminated in red and blue at night. It serves as a focal point for national ceremonies including Independence Day and Water Festival celebrations.
