Banteay Srei Temple
About
Banteay Srei, meaning Citadel of Women, is a 10th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, located about 25 kilometers northeast of the main Angkor complex. Constructed mostly from reddish-pink sandstone, it is celebrated as the jewel of Khmer art due to its remarkably intricate decorative carvings. Every surface is densely covered with delicate floral scrollwork, guardian figures, scenes from Hindu mythology including episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and multi-armed deities rendered in extraordinary detail. Though small in scale compared to other Angkor temples, Banteay Srei is considered by art historians to represent the pinnacle of classical Khmer craftsmanship, and the richness of its ornamentation makes it a highlight for any visitor to the Angkor Archaeological Park.
