Wat Ounalom
About
Wat Ounalom is the headquarters of Cambodian Buddhism and the seat of the Patriarch of the Khmer Buddhist order, situated on the banks of the Tonle Sap river in Phnom Penh. The monastery was founded in 1443 and its name, meaning eyebrow hair, refers to a relic of the Buddha's eyebrow hair said to be enshrined within the main stupa. The compound comprises 44 buildings including a main sanctuary, stupas, library, and monks' quarters housing hundreds of resident monks. During the Khmer Rouge period the complex was severely damaged and its library destroyed. Restored after 1979, Wat Ounalom remains a vibrant and active religious center where morning chanting, ceremonies, and traditional Buddhist teachings continue daily.
