Russian Market (Tuol Tom Poung)
About
The Russian Market, locally called Phsar Tuol Tom Poung, earned its informal name in the 1980s when Soviet and Eastern Bloc expats living in Phnom Penh frequented its stalls. Today it is widely considered the best market in the city for bargain hunting and authentic local shopping. The dense covered labyrinth of stalls sells an eclectic range of goods including silk scarves, stone carvings, lacquerware, brand-name clothing factory seconds, antiques, Buddhist amulets, fresh spices, and ready-to-eat Khmer street food. The narrow lanes are pleasantly shaded and the market has a more local atmosphere than tourist-oriented venues. It is especially popular with expat residents for everyday grocery shopping alongside its remarkable handicraft and souvenir section.
