Koh Trong Island
About
Koh Trong is a narrow teardrop-shaped island sitting in the middle of the Mekong River directly opposite the town of Kratie in northeastern Cambodia, accessible by a short ferry crossing that takes only a few minutes. The island is home to a small community of around 1,000 Khmer and Vietnamese floating-house residents who live by fishing and small-scale farming in an environment that feels entirely removed from the modern world. A 9-kilometer unpaved perimeter road makes the island ideal for cycling, passing through pomelo orchards, vegetable gardens, a small Buddhist temple, and stilted wooden houses along the riverbank. Homestay accommodation with local families is available and provides an immersive experience of quiet Mekong island life alongside the possibility of early-morning dolphin viewing from the island's northern tip.
