Angkor Wat
About
Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and Cambodia's most celebrated landmark, constructed in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu before gradually transitioning to Buddhism. Covering over 400 acres, its five central towers represent Mount Meru, home of the gods in Hindu cosmology. The temple is encircled by a vast moat and an elaborate series of galleries adorned with some of the most detailed bas-reliefs in Southeast Asia, depicting Hindu epics, celestial dancers known as Apsaras, and historical battles. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Angkor Wat draws over two million visitors annually and is the symbol proudly displayed on Cambodia's national flag.
